What is a word unscrambler?

A word unscrambler is a tool that takes a jumbled group of letters and works out every real word you can build from them. Instead of you manually rearranging tiles or letters on paper, the tool compares your letters against a dictionary and instantly returns every match — from two-letter words up to long, high-value plays.

How does it work?

Every word in the dictionary is reduced to a simple tally: how many A's, how many B's, and so on. When you type in your scrambled letters, Affivance builds the same kind of tally for your input, then checks each dictionary word to see if it can be built entirely from letters you have available — never using a letter more times than you typed it.

This is why "reat" can unscramble into tear, rate, tare, eat, tea, art, and rat: each of those words only uses letters that appear in "reat," and never more of a letter than "reat" actually contains.

If you're stuck on a word puzzle with a known pattern (say, a five-letter word that starts with "S"), combine the exact length filter with "Starts with" rather than scrolling through every result by hand.

Raw word count isn't the same as points. Sort your results by highest Scrabble score to surface plays that use high-value letters like J, Q, X, and Z. Also watch for words of 7 or 8 letters — using every tile in your rack triggers a bonus in most official rule sets, so filtering by length can help you spot a bingo you'd otherwise miss.

Before playing a word, double check it against the filters for excluded letters if your board has blocked squares, and consider shorter, cheaper words when you need to keep tiles in reserve for a bigger play next turn.

Word game strategy beyond Scrabble

In Words With Friends, tile values differ slightly from Scrabble, so treat the in-app score as a guide rather than an exact match — the unscrambler's job is to surface every legal word, and the app's own board will confirm final points. For games like Wordle-style puzzles or Jumble, the "contains" and "exclude letters" filters are especially useful for narrowing a huge result list down to a short one that fits what you already know about the answer.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Forgetting duplicate letters count individually. Two E's in your rack means a word can use at most two E's, not three.
• Ignoring board restrictions. An unscrambler finds every valid word from your letters, but it can't see your board — always confirm a word actually fits before playing it.
• Only checking the longest words. Sometimes a short, well-placed word scores more than a long one dropped in a low-value spot.
• Skipping the dictionary check in-app. Different games use slightly different dictionaries; a word found here is a strong candidate, but always confirm it's accepted in your specific game if you're unsure.

Worked examples
